Children’s Shoe Drive

There were 566 known cases of child abuse in our county last year! The Children’s Advocacy Center of Sullivan County will be doing a demonstration with children’s shoes to represent each known victim of child abuse last year. The shoes will then be donated to SMILE Foster Care Closet.

There are several ways to help us get enough new and used shoes for this display:

  • Set up collection boxes in your organization for people to bring children’s shoes.
  • Donate money to be used to purchase new shoes.

Shoes will be on display at our fundraising event “Step Back Into Childhood” April 30th at the Bristol Train Station.

Student Poster Contest

Each April the Children’s Advocacy Center of Sullivan County conducts a poster contest for fifth graders. Students are asked to create a poster themed around child abuse prevention.  The winning poster will be selected by voters via our Facebook page. The winning student’s class will receive a pizza party for their class.

The Children’s Advocacy Center would like to extend this opportunity to fifth grade students at Sullivan County schools again this year. Here are the guidelines for the 2020 contest:

  • Students should craft a message designed to raise awareness of child abuse and the importance of preventing abuse.
  • Students can use a poster size 11 x 17.
  • Please submit one entry from your school. Choose your school’s winner in any way you wish.
  • Your school’s winning poster should be submitted to the Children’s Advocacy Center by Wednesday, April 15. The poster should be sent to 150 Blountville Bypass, Blountville, TN 37617 or if you wish for it to be picked up contact Elise at evalencia@cacsctn.org or call (423)279-1222.

Darkness to Light: Partner in Prevention

A Partner in Prevention is an organization or business that has committed the time and effort to educate themselves on how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. An organization receives the Darkness to Light Partner in Prevention distinction when they have successfully met the annual guidelines established by Darkness to Light.

What the Partner in Prevention Distinction Means to Parents:

Organizations that train their staff and volunteers create an environment that better protect children. Perpetrators are drawn to places where they can have easy access to children. An organization that emphasizes prevention through training and appropriate polices is an unwelcoming place for a perpetrator. Training increases staff and volunteer awareness that teaches them to recognize the signs that an opportunity exists for abuse to occur, and the signs that abuse has occurred. It is also critical that staff and volunteers know how to react if they recognize the signs or if a child discloses abuse.

The Partner in Prevention Commitment Includes:

  • Making prevention a priority by using Stewards of Children® to train staff and volunteers who interact with youth
  • Conducting background checks on staff and volunteers who work with youth
  • Implementing policy that limits opportunities for one adult to be alone with one child

Pinwheeling

Pinwheel kits (1 yard sign with removable post and 50 pinwheels) will be available at the CAC during the month of April. Anyone can come pick one up to decorate a friend or coworkers yard, office, etc.

Once pinwheeled, they should post on our social media with a fact about child abuse and hashtags ______. Then pass the pinwheels on or we will come pick them up if for a donation or schedule a prevention class.

Blue Night 2020: Step Back Into Childhood

In the Spirit of Child Abuse Prevention Month, we present: Step Back Into Childhood. A night of music, community, and fun to support child victims of sexual and severe physical abuse in Sullivan County.

Join us Thursday, April 30th from 5:30-8:30 PM at The Bristol Train Station to learn about how child sexual abuse impacts our community and how we are combating it! Blue Night is an energetic night of fun with the sole purpose of helping the children of Sullivan county to find help, hope and healing from child abuse or, even better, to prevent child abuse from happening at all!

We are excited for the opportunity to get more of our community involved in efforts to eliminate child abuse!

Enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner and locally brewed beer while checking out the silent auction. Chat with professionals who are a part of the Child Protective Investigative Team (CPIT) in our county and cheer on one the one who will be given the annual “Blue Ribbon Award” for outstanding service in helping our children.

You don’t want to miss this event!

The Children’s Advocacy Center is a small non-profit who relies on grants and generous donations to serve victims of child sexual and severe physical abuse and their families at no cost.
